The value of listening
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE | 24 FEBRUARY 2025

Leading a profession more than 43,000 strong, seems on its face, to be a daunting, intimidating duty. That’s why the opportunity to meet individual members on their turf, is one of the best aspects of being President of the Law Society of NSW.

I’ve been enormously fortunate since assuming this role at the beginning of the year, to have spent time with solicitors from Albury, up to Newcastle, and further, to Ballina on the Far North Coast.

There’s no substitute for being able to hear directly from practitioners about the major issues affecting their practices during these events. It’s a privilege to be able to convey to members how the Law Society is working to assist with these issues.

That can range from providing tools to help practices meet the obligations of the new anti-money laundering/counter terrorism financing (AML/CTF) regime, to discussing the practical implications of the Supreme Court’s new Practice Note regarding the use in legal practice of Generative AI platforms.

During his term last year, my predecessor Brett McGrath managed to visit almost every one of our Regional Law Societies, and I also will be on the road as often as I can to take the opportunity to speak directly with members across the state.

I’m particularly excited about taking part in our Central Coast Regional Visit – CPD by the sea at the Pullman Magenta Shores Resort at Magenta next month. The full day program will provide six CPD units, including addresses on AML/CTF and Gen AI from one of the Law Society’s expert Professional Support Solicitors, Carol Prasad.

There’ll also be a session with renowned productivity expert Mario Halouvas whose engaging presentations and ideas can help boost your practice’s efficiency.

Whether you’re a Central Coast practitioner, or just fancy a trip to the beach for CPD with a view, I encourage you to register here. I’m looking forward to seeing you there!
