Conference learning for everyone
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE | 5 AUGUST 2024

Whether you’re just embarking on your legal career or seeking to broaden or reinforce your expertise in your chosen area of law, the Law Society of NSW delivers excellent learning opportunities for all solicitors.

If you are an Accredited Specialist in Wills and Estates, Personal Injury, Business Law, Family Law or Property Law, you only have until COB Wednesday this week to register for the 2024 Specialist Accreditation Conference. Places are filling quickly in all streams, with limited extra room left in both Family Law and Wills and Estates.

As always there is a truly impressive array of legal expertise, from the Bench, the Bar, and senior practitioners on offer. If you don’t yet have Specialist Accreditation but have an appetite for advanced learning, you are also welcome to register.

Conference delegates will have the opportunity to hear from legal experts on the latest substantive law developments and issues impacting their area of practice, while earning 10 CPD units. Day One of the Conference will be delivered in person at the International Convention Centre on 15 August followed by a half-day program of online webinars.

The excitement is also building for our 2024 Annual Conference to be held at the Hyatt Regency Sydney on 10-11 October.

I’ve already discussed some of the compelling speakers and sessions for Day One of this event, entitled The Curious Lawyer and brought to you by the team behind the Law Society Journal. The four streams on Day Two also offer top quality content to nourish your expertise. They are Government Solicitors, In-House Corporate, Rural and Private Practice, and Early Career Lawyers.

I want to encourage solicitors in this last group to come along to the Conference for sessions that are directly relevant to building the foundations of a successful legal career.

One of the most important skills early career lawyers can learn is court advocacy. We have been immensely fortunate in securing former Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Bellew SC to deliver a session that will provide guidance on effective navigation of courtroom etiquette. This session will help attendees hone their advocacy techniques to enhance professionalism, credibility, and persuasive power before judges, juries, and opposing counsel.

Early career lawyers should already have received an exciting update regarding the Annual Conference. All members will receive an email this week about the breadth of sessions on offer. I’m looking forward to seeing you there.
